致我的 2012To My 2012

Today's year-end party told me plainly and unmistakably that 2012 really is ending, and 2013 is already right there.

I still remember clearly the New Year three years ago, coming back from KTV after the school performance, thoroughly happy. And the New Year two years ago — the year that put us through goodbyes — which arrived amid discussion and well-wishes. And this day a year ago, waiting quietly for the midnight bell after hearing Cha Cha sing. One year turns into the next, and now even the year the world was supposed to end is slipping away.

The revelry this afternoon left me wanting more. Everyone performed with everything they had. Thank you for letting me open and close it; thank you for the singing, the crosstalk, the sketches, the street dance, and my favorite, the songs with live accompaniment. Thank you to everyone for everything you put in — and thanks to Dandan for running up and down with me and making it an afternoon I won't forget.

But the quiet after the revelry always makes me sad. Today Master Niu asked why I was smiling during the last song. It was because I saw Cha Cha — the man who was my homeroom teacher for a year and has always backed me. In that instant I really was happy, because it felt like being back six months ago. And then, right after, came the feeling that the scene is the same but the people aren't. It's true: we're not Class 25 anymore, just like Class 5 at No. 45 Middle School from 2008 to 2011 — after one exam, we scattered. Later, in Class 23, he sang, exactly like a year ago. But then he said: I haven't assigned the homework yet. Right — I don't belong to their class, even if the people and the things there are familiar. That sense of loss is like what my deskmate asked after Brother Chun's last lesson: could that have been the last class of his we'll ever sit in?

The snow that raged this morning is no longer swirling in the air, but its cold hasn't lifted. I look at the snow that's turned to ice and sink into thought.

My 2012 really was full of color. There was loss and there was drifting, there were surprises and there was joy. The biggest thing this year was the reshuffle at the end of the first year of high school — from Class 25 to Class 21. Separated from my old classmates, I met a pack of wild creatures. We worked hard together and built the class into something lively. Teacher Xu is genuinely good; sometimes she reminds me of Sister Juan. The days in Class 21 were happy, thanks to the ridiculous conversations we had every day. Though sometimes I drift.

I still miss those middle-school days: messing around with my best friends every day, needling each other, going to school, listening to Mao Xia's standup while watching the sunset, arguing red-faced over an NBA game. But none of it can be gone back to. And as for the future, not knowing scares me too.

This afternoon Niu Zehao said he wants to go through a transformation. Maybe I need one as well. It really is time to grow up.

In memory of my 2012, my sixteenth year.
